2 teens charged with murder, manslaughter in connection with fatal stabbing of 71-year-old N.B. man

Police in Fredericton, N.B., say two teenagers have been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of 71-year-old Mark Albert Brooks on Friday night.

A release issued Saturday says two 17-year-old males have been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. A third male teen, aged 15, was also arrested in connection with the incident but was later released.

The identities of the youths are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Authorities say they received a 911 call shortly after 11 p.m. Friday about a fight in progress on the 500 block of Union Street.

Officers arrived to find the victim critically injured with stab wounds. Emergency services rushed him to the hospital, where he later died.

Police say they quickly apprehended two suspects and later arrested a third who had fled.

Members of the Major Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Section and RCMP Police Dog Services assisted with the investigation.

The two 17-year-olds remained in custody pending their court appearances on Saturday where they were charged, and the 15-year-old was released.

Police say they were able to determine the sequence of events in detail and promptly lay charges against the two youths with the help of witness statements and video evidence provided by local establishments.
