5 things to know in Toronto for Wednesday, Aug. 13

WEATHER

There will be a mix of sun and cloud today with a 30 per cent chance of showers. The daytime high will be 21 C and will fall to a chilly 10 C Wednesday night.

TRAFFIC

Traffic is moving slowly on the eastbound Gardiner Expressway and on Lake Shore Boulevard from Royal York Road to Bathurst Street. Westbound, traffic comes to a crawl from York Street to Bathurst on both the Gardiner and Lake Shore.

Farther north, traffic is nearly stopped on the eastbound Highway 401 from Highway 427 to Islington Avenue, and slow from Islington on to Yonge Street. Westbound, traffic is moving slowly from Morningside Avenue to Allen Road.

Friends, family remember off-duty officer killed in crash

Const. Joseph Mellen, who was killed in a head-on crash last week, will be remembered at a funeral service today. Mellen was riding his motorcycle in Welland, Ont. after finishing a 12-hour overnight shift when his bike was struck by an oncoming car at approximately 5 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The nine-year police officer leaves behind two young children, Nolan and Kaya Mellen.

Bail hearing for man arrested after woman finds stranger in bedroom

A Toronto man who was arrested after a woman woke up to find a stranger in her bedroom is scheduled for a bail hearing at 10 a.m. Police say the man broke into the woman’s home and allegedly assaulted her. Christopher Barber, 26, has been charged with a number of offenses including sexual assault with a weapon, break and enter and possession of property obtained by crime.

SPORTS

After losing to Seattle for the second-straight game, the Toronto Blue Jays will finish their three-game series against the Mariners tonight at the Safeco Field stadium. Wednesday’s game will start at 10:10 p.m. ET.
