There is a major development in the intensifying conflict in the Middle East. In a great blow to the militant group, Hezbollah has confirmed its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah has been assassinated. Over the last three decades, Nasrallah has transformed Hezbollah into a powerful paramilitary and political force in the Middle East. He was targeted in a massive Israeli airstrike on Friday in a densely-populated area of Beirut. Multiple buildings have been levelled, streets are filled with debris and tens of thousands have been displaced. Nasrallah’s death comes during a sharp escalation of hostilities across the Middle East. U.S. President Joe Biden called it a “measure of justice for his many victims” but it remains unclear what it may mean for the widening war. Jeff Semple has more.
