MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The Special Investigations Unit has cleared an Ontario Provincial Police officer in the death of a 34-year-old man in Sarnia.
The police watchdog says the incident happened early on June 25, when the officer saw a motorcycle travelling at about 180 km/h on Highway 402 just outside the city.
It says the officer began a pursuit but ended it after the motorcyclist sped into a residential area and went through a red light (at the intersection of Indian Road and Rosedale Avenue).
The motorcycle continued northbound, went through another red light (at Indian Road and Michigan Avenue) and struck an eastbound SUV.
The SIU says a forensic reconstruction of the crash showed the motorcycle was doing between 175 and 182 km/hr just before the brakes were applied.
The man driving the motorcycle was killed by the impact and the driver of the SUV was seriously injured.
