One person is dead and two people have been rushed to hospital after a single-vehicle crash in Whitby early Friday morning.
It happened on the off ramp from eastbound Highway 401 to Brock Street at around 2:55 a.m.
Ontario Provincial Police say that the 23-year-old male driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene while two passengers – a 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman – were taken to hospital in non-life threatening condition.
It was the second fatal collision in the Whitby area in the last 24 hours.
On Thursday afternoon a 82-year-old man was killed when their motorcycle left the roadway and crashed into a ditch on the on-ramp from westbound Highway 401 to northbound Highway 418.
“The #OPP has responded to 2 fatal collisions in the Whitby area since yesterday and other collisions today throughout the GTA. Please #SlowDown, #DontDrinkAndDrive, #BuckleUp and don’t drive distracted,” police said in a message posted to social media.
The off ramp from eastbound Highway 401 to Brock Street is currently closed and will not reopen until road sign repairs are completed, police say.
The on ramp from Brock Street to eastbound Highway 401 was also closed for several hours but reopened shortly after 9 a.m.
So far no details about the circumstances surrounding the latest collision have been released.
