Peel police officer charged in Mississauga crash that killed 41-year-old man

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has charged a Peel Regional Police officer in connection with a fatal crash in Mississauga back in June.

SIU director Tony Loparco says he has reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence in connection with a fatal crash involving a motorcycle near Tomken and Derry roads on June 19.

Police at the time said the motorcycle was travelling north toward Derry Road when it collided with the Peel police cruiser.

The motorcyclist, identified as a 41-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer in the cruiser was on duty at the time of the crash, police said.

In a news release issued Monday, the agency said Const. Brandon Strain has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.

He is scheduled to appear in a Brampton court on Jan. 9, 2017.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
