Police charge man with impaired driving after dog struck and killed

Police have charged a 30-year-old man with impaired driving on Thursday after an off-road vehicle struck a dog in April in Blackstock, a town east of Port Perry.

Durham Regional Police said officers responded to a motor vehicle collision on Church Street on April 23 around 8:40 p.m. They said the driver of an off-road motorcycle lost control and hit a dog. The animal died at the scene, according to police, and the driver suffered a serious head injury.

The driver was then airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto for treatment.

A suspect was arrested at his home on June 23.

Blackstock resident Taylor Churchill was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. He was later released on promise to appear.

Police are asking anyone with information on the incident to call 1-888-579-1520.
