Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate after a motorcycle crash in Markham claimed the life of one person Monday.
Officers with York Regional Police were attempting to stop a male motorcyclist travelling on Major Mackenzie Drive just before 1 p.m. when the motorcycle collided with another civilian vehicle at the intersection of McCowan Road and Major Mackenzie, the SIU said.
The motorcyclist was taken to Markham Stouffville Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
There were no other injuries reported.
The SIU is a provincial agency that investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
Major Mackenzie has been closed off to traffic in both directions between McCowan and Stricker Avenue as authorities investigate.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead investigator at 416-622-2293.
